21st September Meeting Update

22/9/2018

21STSeptember.  2018
Those of you who deserted the club for the football missed a most enjoyable evening, and if you are a Tiger supporter a more entertaining one too.
Hot tea or coffee as you enter! Volunteer Chef Rob Frost is on a mission, and will also ensure the healthy herbals and crisp biscuits appear. For the foreseeable future this only leaves room for one more volunteer to attend Tea duty, apologies for the great disappointment this must cause.
Joe Magee was on Presentation media duty. Ably assisted Ron with the never ending battle against artificially stupid machines. But it must be noted that Joe outmatched Shorts-master Gary. He actually typed the new topic suggestions faster than Gary called them out!
Geoff Ross gave a report on his presentation to the Knox Photographic Society. About 40 or so members attended. Geoff displayed the equipment he uses and spoke on his approach to film making stressing in particular the transition photographers need to make to move from still photography to moving images. He feels there is the possibility some of the participants might be interested in making movies and joining RMM, though most are really interested in just integrating film with their stills.
Norman gave a report of the Club’s participation in the Ringwood Bunnings Community day on Sunday the 15th. John Millard, Robert Frost, Norman and wife Trudy made up the RMM team. Joe Magee was a backup if needed. About 12 community Groups participated including, Art, Stamp collecting, Men Shed, Rotary and many Children’s groups. The RMM team set up the club banner, a green screen and camera, and ran some club movies on an overhead TV.  There were not many visitors to the club stand partly because of the location. One family did ask and had themselves filmed driving through Paris. Most people visiting Bunnings were preoccupied with their purchasing, and the few we spoke to were polite but confessed they were already involved in family or work. We did find a spark of interest among the other community groups and quite a few said they may approach us to collaborate with them to produce presentation or informative videos for their clubs.  All in all a useful experience but we will probably give participating in the Bunning’s Community Days in the future a miss.
Where do our members get their ideas for the ‘shorts’?  You may remember the topic was Multiculturalism.  We travelled from Belgium to industry, food to junior footy, and did you know that one in seventy two of the world’s populations are refugees?  Staggering, isn’t it?  What are our members going to make of the next topic which is Red Herring. – but they do have until 19thOctober.
The main event of the evening was a talk by Colin Paxman.  Colin is not a stranger to the club so we knew we were in for an enthralling time. Colin has been one of our regular judges for our Movie  of the Year competition.
Colin films all the time, wherever and whenever he can. He currently produces, what he calls sketches, (one to two minute) promotional pieces of whatever event he happens to film at, and the work he showed us is very impressive. We  travelled from Sydney’s Chinese gardens to the beautiful textures of outback sand dunes to the art of Melbourne’s laneways, to a White Night sequence. He is a member of the Melbourne PC User Group, participating in the Video SIG (Special Interest Group). Colin has produced and showed us an excellent promotional video for the group. Colin’s editing and matching of images to dynamic sound tracks is an excellent skill and produces very interesting footage.
Colin has his own production group called Filmagic productions (see Facebook).  Working mainly with his co-founder Chris, they  produce a Short ‘feature’ film (10-15 minutes) every two years. Colin writes the story, develops the storyboard and the shooting script, produces, directs and edits (Final Cut). All films have been shot on the Gold Coast where Chris, the camera and cinematographer lives. Several times during his talk he stressed that he works off micro budgets. The evening ended with a showing of A Case to Answer in which much blood was spilt.
You Richmond supporters would have got much more out of listening to Colin Paxman.
Don’t forget to invite and bring friends, relatives, acquaintances and anyone else you can think of to our meeting on 5thOctober, which will be our contribution to Seniors Week 2018. Even better if you can bring something to eat as well. ( The program was included in a previous email )
