2025 Meeting Reports

1st August 2025

The new president Elizabeth Nash welcomed members to the meeting.
Elizabeth with the support of the committee will be ‘trying out’ some new changes to
the meetings.

Elizabeth commenced with a slide show talking about the following items;
A powerpoint/slide will be presented with the topics for the evening
There will be new layout for the chairs in ‘semi circle setting’ to enable discussions
Supper will be held halfway during the meeting ie 8.30, to be tested during this
evening’s meeting.

Elizabeth emphasized that members need to ‘Share responsibilities’ particularly in
preparing the supper – before and after the meeting and also in undertaking the report
for the meeting. Elizabeth thanked John Millard for doing the report for the past
meetings, tonight Maureen Plain will do the report and the following meetings to be
allocated.

The rest remains the same.

Committee Reports
4 meetings a year minimum

The new committee met on Thursday 31/7/25. The committee members are:
President: Elizabeth Nash, Vice President:Norman Lingwood , Secretary Ron Fry
Treasurer: Philip Hughes Committee members: Maureen Plain, Geoff Ross and Tony
King

The following topics were discussed – 5th Fridays

Elizabeth suggested that on 5th Fridays, when previously a club dinner was organized
at the Ringwood Club will now be changed to an activity/shared meal night at the
Senior Citizens rooms with the first as Pizza night on Friday 29th August. Elizabeth
advised that for this meeting the club will pay for the pizzas. It was further suggested
by members that on these future nights, members contribute $5 towards the pizza.
The activities are to be further explored.
Equipment
The club requires new equipment initially a new laptop. The committee will explored
the availability of community grants to assist with this, otherwise the club will fund
any new equipment.

Financial
The club has $3516.12 in the current account which covers running costs such as hall
hire, insurances and other expenses. The committee recognizes that the raffle
organized by Brian Endersbee is an important part of the club’s income. Elizabeth
thanked Brian for continuing to organize the raffle and for members’ participation.
There is $10112.46 in a term deposit account which is essentially for equipment.
However as stated the committee agreed that accessing community grants for
equipment would be appropriate.

Security
It was discussed at the meeting that due to the location of the hall it would be
recommended to lock the inner door of the hall after 8 p.m. to ensure that no
unexpected visitors arrive. All members can easily open this door to leave or go to
the toilets. Members accepted this.
It was also noted that the defibrillator in the foyer may not be working, Sue from the
Senior Citizens was present and advised that she had contacted the council who were
following up, however she will contact them again.
Moviemakers operating manual and website.
The committee will be updating the club operating manual and reviewing the website
to ensure it is current.

Mayoral visit
The Mayor of Maroondah, Kylie Spears is interested in attending one of the club’s
meeting and Elizabeth will contact her with proposed dates of 19th September, 3rd
October or 17th October.

Members will be giving plenty of notice to ensure you all look your best for the night.

This year the Christmas dinner will be held at the Senior Citizen Hall. Details in
regard to catering and costs to be advised. This has occurred at the previous venue

meeting. Joe also shared is ‘birdshot’ story.
The shorts topic – ‘No Exit’

Took us down the path of the origins of the word ‘exit’ in Latin and conjugating
verbs, a detailed table was included and a pastel exit from the house to roman gardens
‘No exit’ – Tim Morrow

ended in a cemetery, clearly that’s a exit.

Member Films

This section was dedicated to the topic of ‘Significant People’.
The first two movies were - John Millar and John Bishop and clearly the ’10 pound
pom’ initiative brought these talented men to the club. It was great to recognize the
achievements of the club’s members.

John Millard – this film was developed by Ron.
This provided the story of John’s life in Africa, UK and then Australia with his wife
and family. A number of his films were shown and demonstrated his talent in various
genres particularly humour. Congratulations John and Ron.

John Bishop – this film was developed by Norm
This provided the story of John’s life growing up in UK but in particular his technical
skills in television repair and then videos - from Billy Guyatt’s, to his business with
another partner known as Rielly Bishop and then is own business Mr Video. It
showed the pathway from TV to videos. Congratulations John and Norm.

‘Someone I knew’ – James Rayment
This provided the story of Jose Luis Duran and his encounters with UFOs. James
overcame the difficulty of the protagonist not anting to be filmed.

After these films supper was provided, however it was decided that the introduction
of supper midway through the meeting was disruptive and there was still the issue of
cleaning up. It was decided that supper remain at the end of the meeting when chairs
are being put away and the raffle is conducted.

The meeting resumed -
Topic For the Night Films

Scripts in documentaries.
Elizabeth presented two examples – ‘Art in Isolation’ by Philip Mould and ‘American
Vision’ by Robert Hughes. Highlighted the importance of documentaries being
succinct, including images and awareness of copyright.

Discussion

Members highlighted –
The presenter’s presentation in terms of voice, tone and timing are important. ‘Art in
Isolation’ the presenter was ‘layback’ with a softer voice whilst Robert Hughes in
‘American Vision‘ upbeat’ and ‘grabbed your attention’.
The introduction – ‘Art in Isolation’ was a little unclear however Robert Hughes in
‘American Vision’ was very clear and succinct.
Also, it is important to consider the audience particularly in terms of topic and how to
capture their attention for the documentary.
Time spent refining a script is important and timing it to the vision can be a challenge.

The meeting ended approx. 9.30 pm

Minutes – Maureen Plain
