16th May 2025
Norm wasn’t able to be with us tonight, so we followed the example of the Liberal Party and
promoted a female into the Top Dog position. Please forgive me for not being too gender
specific, it might be misconstrued. The absence of Joe doubled the responsibility of the Top
Dog, but Elizabeth took it in her stride – as we all knew she would.
Elizabeth welcomed a visitor, John Ramsden, to the meeting and looked forward to seeing a
couple of his short movies later in the evening. The ACMI display, which had included RMM,
is closing next Monday, and items loaned by club members will be available next meeting for
collection. And then it was into the shorts.
The topic was ‘Extravaganza’ and Maureen was the first off the editing suite with what she
would do if she were to win Tatts. Norm built the word using letter tiles and Richard tested
us to recognize different songs played live. No-one got the fifth song. Matt gave us a short,
experimental glimpse of, to him, new software and what it could do. Craig showed what it
was like out and about around Melbourne on one of those delightful days we’ve had lately.
Helmut was away with the fairies in New Zealand – the Hobbit fairies. That looked like an
(expensive) event not to be forgotten. James finished the shorts with a delightful walk
through the bush with very appropriate, AI generated music.
Our visitor, John, told the story of how he gradually talked around staff to be part of – and
enjoyed making – A bad day at the office. He finished on a more somber note showing how
he shared his wife’s last days. John has just completed a project of making 100 short movies
showing episodes in his life. Some of these can be seen, with stories, on Saturday, 23rd of
August, starting at 7.30p.m. at the Croydon Hills Baptist Church, 6, Bamboka Rd. Croydon.
There will be an entry fee of 20cents. I’ll repeat that, 20 cents.
Elizabeth took over again showing how important it is that the setting of a movie matches
the story. Two excerpts from Agatha Christie mysteries illustrated the point. Craig told some
stories, quoting eye watering figures, to show how important the big guys think it is to get
the settings “right”.
Don’t forget, the shorts topic for next meeting, 6th June, is Tattoo.
Short Topic for 20th June is Colour.
And be on your best behaviour everyone, no playing up; the ACMI lady will be visiting us
next time.
Good shooting.
