Following Meeting Shorts Topic: "I can’t remember”
This Meeting details:
Shorts: Time Machine was the topic.
We had four films on Topic;
Member Film:
After our previous meeting’s discussion John Millard dug out a documentary he had made a little while ago on the History of Doncaster. He wanted our opinion about the techniques he had used: when referring to the past: Black and white stills, just voice over no ambient music, comparing with current times: Ambient noise, coloured movie pictures. It was divided using techniques into then and now. It worked quite successfully and he was encouraged to finish it add titles etc as we felt it was interesting and had merit.
Topic for the Night: Investigating titles
Elizabeth had some examples of titles used in films. Starting with:
Saul Bass and the art of Movie Title design:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_Mo0MqICXI
Then we watched hand drawn titles from a children’s film: Little Nicolas
These were very whimsical and delightful, making boring information
interesting to watch.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-WM2euWp3w&t=32s
The title sequence to Vertigo was watched. From 1958 this featured the first
computer generated images in the titles.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdV818ctqpI
Other title sequences were watched:
Inception: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yG_BkhxOC2A
This like many titles gave a visual synopsis of the film. Very clever graphics influenced by Saul Bass.
Catch me if you can another sequence in a similar style.

Many of the title sequences influenced or were used in the publicity posters used to promote the films. We all agreed we could go beyond the basic black and white titles that many of us throw in at the end of our film making process.
The meeting finished with supper back in the usual place at the end of the evening.
